Iowa makes 12 of 22 3-pointers in drubbing of Marquette Rick Brown/HawkCentral.com

MILWAUKEE — Experience took potential to the woodshed Thursday.

With five minute-rich veterans in the starting lineup, Iowa led by as many as 28 points in the first half and 35 in the second half of an 89-61 domination of Marquette in the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games.

Peter Jok, back in the Iowa lineup after missing the last game with a sprained ankle, finished with a career-high 20 points.

"I was hungry to come out and play," Jok said.

The junior guard  had plenty of offensive company. All five starters scored in double figures. Jarrod Uthoff added 15, Anthony Clemmons and Mike Gesell 11 each and Adam Woodbury 10 to go with a team-high 11 rebounds. Dom Uhl also had 10 points off the bench.

"Six guys in doubles, and nobody cares who the leading scorer is," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "That's a good feeling as a coach."

And in a twist of history, the same thing happened the last time these teams played. That game was on December of 1982 at Iowa Fieldhouse in Iowa City. No. 7 Iowa handled No. 16 Marquette that day, 87-66. And yes, all five Hawkeye starters scored in double figures.

"I think this place is a little bit nicer than Iowa Fieldhouse," Woodbury said. "Nontheless, it's always fun to get a win on the road against a big-time team. They're fairly young, but I think they're going to have some success this year."

Iowa's first five had a combined 290 career starts entering the game. Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski, who brought in a top-10 national recruiting class into his second season, put a team on the floor with 70 career starts. Using that experience was part of Iowa's game plan.

"Just come out aggressive," said Clemmons, a senior. "We've played in so many big games, so many road trips, so we're pretty much used to it. It was a big plus for us."

Hawkeyes limited Golden Eagles to 36.8 percent shooting Rick Brown/HawkCentral.com

The Hawkeyes wasted no time flexing those experienced muscles, taking the announced crowd of 13,297 out of the game by jumping out to a 10-2 lead. That advantage continued to grow. A Dale Jones triple gave Iowa a 46-18 lead with 2 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in the first. Iowa took a 48-21 advantage into halftime.

After turning the ball over just twice in the first half, the Hawkeyes gave Marquette a glimmer of hope by turning it over on their first three possessions of the closing half. The Golden Eagles quickly got the deficit under 20 points for the first time in almost 10 minutes. But Iowa then inflicted its will with a 9-1 run. Game over.

Marquette was its own worse enemy from the very start, firing blanks from the perimeter because Iowa's interior defense was giving up nothing off the dribble, in the paint.. The Golden Eagles missed their first 10 attempts from 3. At that point, Jok had made three of four. Five different Hawkeyes made at least one triple in the first 20 minutes — Uthoff, Clemmons, Gesell and Jones. Iowa was 7 of 15 from long distance the first half, Marquette just 2 of 19.

Iowa finished the game 12 of 22 from 3-point territory and shot 54.5 percent from the field. Marquette made just seven of 30 triples and shot 38.6 percent from the field. The Hawkeyes' defense deserved a lot of credit for that, contesting the ball inside and getting out to contest 3-pointers.

"Our guys executed the gameplan to perfection on the defensive side of the floor," McCaffery said.
