COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Replays showed a questionable call went against Iowa in the second quarter of Saturday's 38-31 loss to Maryland.
With the ball on the Iowa 4 and the Terrapins trailing, 14-10, quarterback C.J. Brown fumbled at the 1-yard-line and the Hawkeyes recovered. Though Brown was ruled down at the 1 by officials, replays seemed to indicate it was a fumble.
But referee Dave Witvoet explained there was not enough video evidence to overturn the call on the field. On the next play, Wes Brown went into the end zone from 1 yard out.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said he was given no explanation on the decision.
"On replays it's like, 'If you're going to beat the heavyweight champion, you better knock him out,' " Ferentz said.
