The University of Iowa volleyball team saw its four-match win streak come to an end Wednesday night when it fell to defending national champion and No. 6 Penn State 3-0 in State College, Pa.

The Nittany Lions won 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 to improve to 25-3 overall and 13-2 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes fell to 13-13 and 5-10.

“Our group came out against the defending national champion and we made them earn our respect,” Iowa coach Bond Shymansky. “We battled with them early on and then they separated. Our group got intimidated for a little bit.

“I loved that our team came back and made them work in the third set. This is a tough road trip, but it’s a big deal for us to get this experience moving forward.”

Mikaela Gunderson had six kills and a .556 hitting percentage for the Hawkeyes, Kaylee Smith had 18 assists, and Michelle Fugarino and Alyssa Klostermann each had seven digs.
