Iowa wrestling has been recruiting big names for the class of 2017.
On Sunday, it just went big.
Western Dubuque of Epworth heavyweight Aaron Costello committed to the Hawkeyes late Sunday afternoon, deciding to stay in-state a few weeks ahead of his senior season.
Costello finished as Class 3A runner-up in last season’s traditional state tournament. His 49-5 junior year was ended by county rival and current Iowa State heavyweight Gannon Gremmel, who went on to win a Junior Nationals title in Fargo, N.D.
Costello earned all-American honors in Fargo himself, finishing sixth in the Greco-Roman competition. He edged out nationally-ranked Sammy Evans of Tennessee on Oct. 14 in the preseason “Night of Conflict” at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. According to IAWrestle.com, Costello was also considering South Dakota State and Gardner-Webb.
He’s the fifth known commitment in Iowa’s 2017 class and is ranked 12th at 285 pounds by FloWrestling.com.
