MMM nope: Hanson says we've been singing 'MMMBop' wrong this whole time
So, um, did you guys know that MMMBop came out 20 years ago?
It's unfortunately very, very true. The
impossible to get out of your head no matter what you try catchy tune from Hanson hit the airwaves all the way back in 1996. Seriously.
And if that reminder of the fleeting nature of time and your own inevitable demise didn't make you depressed enough, apparently you've been singing the song wrong for 20 straight years.
In an interview with Vulture celebrating the song's anniversary, Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson explained that most covers of the song syncopate it incorrectly. And if professional covers can't do it, you know you can't. Here's what they said:
Q: Have you heard any good covers of it over the years?
T.H.: I gotta be honest: No.
I.H.: You know why? People can’t sing the chorus right. Most of the time they syncopate it wrong.
Z.H.: I think MMMBop probably needs a really good cover …
T.H.: Someone needs to either make it totally their own in a genuinely unique way, or it needs to be a band that has a sensibility for old R&B. Fitz and the Tantrums could maybe do it …
I.H.: If Bruno Mars were interested, he’d probably find a way to kill it.
You can listen to the correct version of the song below. And think about your life and your choices and how hard it is to sing on-beat.
