'College GameDay': Which headgear did Lee Corso pick for the Cy-Hawk game?
ESPN's "College GameDay" is the best showcase college football has to offer. But no tradition carries as much cache as Lee Corso's choice of headgear for the marquee game the show travels to each week.
The venerable host and former college football coach makes a show of who he picks for the big game, as a 3-hour telecast crescendos to a boo-or-cheer moment.
He offered a quick head-fake before making his selection among the thousands at Jack Trice Stadium for the Iowa State vs. Iowa Cy-Hawk matchup at 3 p.m. in Ames.
GAMEDAY REPLAY: A complete summary of 3 hours of madness at Iowa State
"Let me tell you something. The University of Iowa's got a lot going for it in this one. ... Iowa has beaten them twice as many times (44-22). Iowa has won four straight against Iowa State. Iowa has won three straight in this town. Yes.
"And the guys in Las Vegas say Iowa is a road favorite. It's a lock. There's no way. Iowa's gonna win this ballgame. Gimme that Hawkeye head."
But a beat. Then, a scowl.
"Is that a head fake?" asked longtime co-host and primary ESPN college football Kirk Herbstreit.
"Ehhhhhhhhh," Corso said. "These people aren't gonna let Iowa win that game. Gimme that head."
And with one lift of Iowa State mascot Cy's head, Corso made sure that he'll never have to pay for anything in Ames again.
A summary of other experts' thoughts on the big game:
Desmond Howard: Likes the atmosphere. Like the extra week of preparation. Iowa State.
Guest picker Eric Church: Iowa has owned the fourth quarter (38-14) in the past four Cy-Hawk games. He sees another close one, but that late dominance will rear its head again. Iowa.
Kirk Herbstreit: He loves Ames. He loves Matt Campbell's future in Ames. He loves Kirk Ferentz more. Iowa.
Earlier, David Pollack and gambling expert Chris Fallica each picked Iowa State as well. So that's a count of 4-2 in favor of the Cyclones, looking to break that Cy-Hawk dry spell.
