Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell held starting lineup cards close to his chest Monday.

Has starting center Colin Newell recovered from first-game injury enough to start in Saturday’s 3 p.m. game against No. 18 Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium?

“Questionable,” Campbell said on the Big 12 Conference teleconference Monday. “We’re hoping he can practice Tuesday.”

Same question, but this time concerning versatile running back and kick returner Kene Nwangwu?

“Probable,” the coach said. “He practiced at he end of (last) week.”

More Cy-Hawk coverage:

Newell suffered a sprained knee in the three-overtime win against Northern Iowa on Aug. 31. Nwangwu suffered an apparent shoulder injury. The 1-0 Cyclones didn't have a game last Saturday.

Newell has started 13 games in a row, so him missing the game would be substantial in facing a Hawkeye team that has one of the best front fours in college football.

Both players are on the most recent depth chart -— Newell as the starter, and Nwangwu among a handful of running backs that could play.
