University of Iowa terminates contract of field hockey coach
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta today terminated the contract of head field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum.
"Tracey has had a successful career as our head field hockey coach. I am appreciative of her service," said Barta.
"Following a comprehensive review of the field hockey program conducted this summer, I have made the decision it was time for a change in leadership."
Barta said the university will honor the terms of Griesbaum's contract which provides that she receive a one-time payment of $200,000 in the event of a not-for-cause termination.
The UI field hockey team is scheduled to open its 2014 season with an exhibition game against Louisville on Aug. 23 at Grant Field in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes' first regular season competition is the 2014 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Aug. 30-31 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Iowa is scheduled to play Wake Forest and North Carolina. Barta said he is working to identify new leadership for the program as quickly as possible.
"Our immediate focus is to provide our returning student-athletes the assistance they need to make this transition and begin their season," said Barta.
