All great sports columnists share a few key traits.
They have something to say and the ability to say it well.
They have guts, especially when they know their opinion isn’t the popular one.
They understand their readers. They get the story. And they get it right.
Iowa Hawkeyes columnist Rick Brown, who left the Register in December, embodied those traits. So does Hawkeyes beat reporter Chad Leistikow, who worked alongside Brown last year during Iowa’s undefeated football regular season.
When we launched the search for Rick’s replacement, we immediately knew the best choice was already part of our sports staff. We’re excited to share that Chad will be stepping into the role of Hawkeyes columnist for the Des Moines Register and Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Chad’s a familiar face to the Hawkeyes faithful — an Iowa City native who cares deeply about his work on University of Iowa sports coverage. He’s smart, hugely talented and fair. Readers appreciate his thorough approach.
Chad will assume his new columnist role once we hire his replacement on the Hawkeyes beat. We’ll continue to match up our coverage for Iowa and Iowa State, with a columnist and reporter covering each university’s sports programs.
Chad has worn many hats at the Register — copy editor, assistant sports editor, sports editor, Iowa beat writer. He’s excelled at them all.
And we know that will be the case when he steps into his new role soon.
