No. 17 Iowa defeats Northern Illinois in extra innings
The 17th-ranked Iowa baseball team won 4-3 in 11 innings over Northern Illinois Wednesday at Duane Banks Field.
Hawkeye Eric Schenck Joblinske drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th, improving Iowa's record to 27-11 overall.
"The great thing about this team is they never quit. They find a way to win despite the situation. We didn't execute in every situation tonight but I know they're going to go out and give it their all each and every day," Iowa coach Rick Heller said.
Iowa trailed 3-2 in the ninth, but Jake Mangler began the frame with a leadoff double to the outfield. Dan Potempa later delivered a single and Mangler scored and forced extra innings.
Mangler, Kris Goodman and Taylor Kaufman connected on three straight one-out singles. Northern Illinois' closer Andrew Frankenreider struck out the next batter before Schenck-Joblinske drew the 3-2 walk. Mangler (2-for-5), Goodman (2-for-4) and Jimmy Frankos (2-3) paced the Iowa offense.
Luke Vandermaten (2-0) earned the win for Iowa while Frankenreider (1-2) suffered the loss for the Huskies. Northern Illinois' record dropped to 15-25 overall.
