IOWA CITY, Ia. — The Iowa baseball team’s three-game winning streak was halted Sunday as Maryland salvaged the last of a three-game series with a 4-1 victory at Duane Banks Field.

Brian Shaffer (3-1) tossed a complete game for Maryland, giving up just five hits while striking out seven Hawkeyes without a walk.

The Terrapins (11-12, 1-2 Big Ten Conference) jumped on Iowa starter Calvin Mathews (0-2), stringing together five consecutive first-inning hits while scoring three runs. An AJ Lee two-out single in the third chased Mathews, who gave up seven hits in 22/3 innings.

The lone run for the Hawkeyes (9-12, 2-1) came on an Eric Schenck-Joblinske homer in the third.

Ryan Erickson, Luke Vandermaten and Jared Mandel combined for 62/3 scoreless innings of relief for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes host Northern Illinois at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday before traveling to Minnesota for their first road Big Ten series of the season.
