Nick Gallagher delivered another strong outing. The Iowa offense showed up in abundance, and the Hawkeyes climbed back over .500 on the young season.
Behind solid performances on both sides of the ball, Iowa upended Alabama State, 9-2, in Friday’s Hoover Classic opener at the Hoover Met in Hoover, Ala. Gallagher (1-0) tossed seven quality innings, yielding seven hits, two runs and two walks with seven strikeouts. Through two starts this season, the Iowa City West product dons a measly 1.93 ERA.
There was plenty of offensive assistance as well. Iowa (3-2) countered Alabama State’s two-run third with three in the bottom half, then tacked on six more from the fifth inning on. Four different Hawkeyes had at least two hits, while Jake Adams and Austin Guzzo drove in three apiece.
Guzzo launched a two-run homer in the fifth to hand Iowa a 5-2 advantage, and Adams followed suit in the eighth with a two-run long ball to left.
The two teams will play again Saturday at 4 p.m. Iowa will then close the weekend at noon Sunday against Morehead State.
