Iowa baseball: Hawkeyes' Nick Allgeyer named Big Ten pitcher of the week

Iowa lefty Nick Allgeyer has been named the Big Ten pitcher of the week after shutting down Nebraska in Friday’s doubleheader opener, the league announced Monday.
Allgeyer propelled the Hawkeyes to a 7-1 win, tossing seven innings with just one unearned run surrendered. Allgeyer struck out four and yielded five hits.
After Tommy John surgery sidelined him last season, Allgeyer has been Iowa’s best pitcher this season. The Hawkeyes’ Friday night arm is 4-3 with a 2.05 ERA and eight quality starts.
Allgeyer will take the mound on Friday, when the Hawkeyes (21-11, 6-4 Big Ten) return to conference play at Minnesota. Iowa hosts Northern Illinois in Tuesday’s midweek showdown.
