Banham’s buzzer-beating 3 lifts Minnesota past Iowa

Register staff report

A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Rachel Banham lifted Minnesota to a 78-76 win over Iowa Monday at Williams Arena.

Banham’s score, which gave her a game-high 35 points, came just seconds after an Ally Disterhoft basket that gave Iowa a 76-75 lead.

While Iowa got 55 points from the trio of Chase Coley, Megan Gustafson and Ally Disterhoft, the Hawkeyes could not slow the nation’s highest-scoring duo.

The Golden Gophers’ Banham and Carlie Wagner came into the game averaging a combined 45.5 points per game. The pair scored 52 points on Monday.

The last-second loss was Iowa’s fourth in a row, and dropped the Hawkeyes to 5-9 in the Big Ten Conference.

Up next for Iowa (15-11) is a 7 p.m. game Thursday against Purdue at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
