IOWA CITY, Ia. — Last week was Makenzie Meyer's first as Iowa's backup point guard. It was also her best week of the season.

So good, in fact, that on Monday she was named the Big Ten women's basketball freshman of the week.

Iowa's Makenzie Meyer drives to the hoop during the Hawkeyes' game against Michigan State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017.

Meyer averaged 15 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists in the Hawkeyes' two games last week — a win against Michigan State and a loss at Ohio State.

She scored a career-high 14 points against the Spartans and set another career high with 16 points in Columbus. She shot 6-for-7 in that game, including a spotless 3 of 3 mark from long range.

This is Meyer's first freshman of the week honor and Iowa's first since Megan Gustafson earned the title Feb. 22 of last year.

Ally Disterhoft also was named the to Big Ten player of the week honor roll with Michigan's Katelynn Flaherty and Penn State's Teniya Page. Disterhoft notched a 25-point, 12-board double-double against Michigan State and followed that with 22 points and seven boards against the Buckeyes.

She's now up to seven games this season with 20-plus points, and this week marked the first time this year she's done it in back-to-back games.
