The latest major honor for Iowa lineman Brandon Scherff
Brandon Scherff became Kirk Ferentz's sixth Associated Press first-team All-American on Tuesday.
The senior was one of two offensive tackles to be named to the prestigious All-America team, joining Baylor junior Spencer Drango.
Scherff scooped up the Outland Trophy — awarded to college football's top interior lineman — last week and received a rousing ovation when he appeared at the Iowa-Iowa State basketball game Friday night in Iowa City.
"To become one of the best offensive linemen in the nation was one of my goals," Scherff said. "It comes through a lot of hard work. If it wasn't for my teammates, I wouldn't be up there."
Scherff, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound native of Denison, joins an elite list of Hawkeyes to be named an AP first-teamer. The others in Ferentz's 16 years as Iowa coach are running back Shonn Greene (2008), lineman Robert Gallery (2003), kicker Nate Kaeding (2003), tight end Dallas Clark (2002) and lineman Eric Steinbach (2002).
Scherff is rated as an upper-first round pick in the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft. But first, he has one more game in a Hawkeye uniform — Iowa (7-5) vs. Tennessee (6-6) in the Jan. 2 TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.
Other Big Ten players named to the AP's first team Tuesday: Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, Indiana running back Tevin Coleman and Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa.
