IOWA CITY, Ia. – Zach Johnson was living the dream Saturday.
He was sitting on the Iowa bench, son Will by his side, soaking in the atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium before the Wisconsin game.
"I'd like to say this brings back memories, but I don't think I've ever sat on the bench," said the Iowa native, 2007 Masters champion and 11-time winner on the PGA Tour. "So in that regard, there's no memories. It's awesome, especially since I could bring (Will). This is our first father-son trip."
The Johnsons flew in from their home in St. Simons Island, Ga., Friday, and will return home Sunday. Zach, who grew up in Cedar Rapids and played college golf at Drake, is a lifelong Hawkeye fan. He tries to attend at least one football game a season.
Johnson was dressed for the cause, with an Iowa hat on his head and specialized New Balance shoes on his feet. His left shoe had I-O on the heel. The right shoe had W-A on the heel.
"Why not?" Johnson said. "It's where I'm from."
Johnson's 2015 PGA Tour season is rapidly approaching. He'll have his annual preseason summit with his team – including caddy Damon Green, swing coach Mike Bender, mental coach Dr. Morris Pickens and agent Brad Buffoni – on Nov. 30.
He'll defend his title in the Tiger Woods World Challenge at Isleworth Country Club in Windemere, Fla., Dec. 3-7. Johnson will also defend his Hyundai Tournament of Champions title in Maui, Hawaii, Jan. 9-12.
Johnson will also be the featured guest on the "Feherty Show, set to debut on the Golf Channel Tuesday at 9 p.m. The show was taped in St. Simons Island on Oct. 29.
"They made it so good, so easy," Johnson said. "David is tremendous. He's a lot of fun to be around."
