Cyclones in Top 5 at NCAA golf, Hawkeyes tied for 8th
Iowa State's men's golf team is tied for fourth after Thursday's opening round of the NCAA Bremerton Regional in Bremerton, Wash. Iowa is tied for eighth at the Yale Regional in New Haven, Conn.
Sam Daley led the Cyclones, playing for a second straight trip to the national finals, with a 2-under-par 70 that is tied for eighth in the medalist race. Iowa State was at 1-under 287 as a team. Nick Voke also broke par with an opening 71 and Ruben Sondjaja matched par with a 72. Scott Fernandez added a 74 and Collin Foster a non-counting 76.
Iowa State trails leader Alabama-Birmingam by seven shots. The top five teams from each of the six regionals move on to nationals after Saturday's final round. Nationals will take place May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Senior Ian Vandersee led the Hawkeyes, playing for a fourth national bid in seven years, with a 1-over-par 71. Iowa is 10 shots back of leader South Florida. Carson Schaake added a 72, Brian Bullington a 73 and Raymond Knoll a 75. Sam Meuret added a non-counting 77.
