Iowa’s Raymond Knoll shot a 6-under-par 66 and is in a four-way tie for the individual lead after Friday’s first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow in Burlington.
Knoll is tied with Austin James of Charleston Southern and the North Carolina State tandem of David Cooke and Nolan Mills. The Wolfpack have the team lead after shooting a 19-under 269. That’s good for a 12-shot advantage over Charleston Southern heading into Saturday’s second round.
Iowa is third in the 15-team field after an opening 284. SMU is fifth at 289. The Mustangs’ Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning U.S. Amateur and NCAA champion, shot 72. Reigning NCAA team champion LSU is in 11th after the first day at 298.
The 54-hole championship runs through Sunday.
