Raymond Knoll collected his first career victory in record-setting fashion, and led Iowa’s golf team to a victory in the Golfweek Conference Challenge Sunday at Spirit Hollow in Burlington.
Knoll finished at 11-under-par 205 with rounds of 66-67-72, a school record for 54 holes. Knoll tied for medalist honors with Jeremy Gandon of Kansas State, who eagled the par-5 finishing hole to catch him with a closing 66. Reigning U.S. Amateur and NCAA champion Bryson DeChambeau of SMU tied for 13th, seven shots behind Knoll and Gandon.
Knoll didn’t make his first bogey until the 41st hole of the 54-hole championship. Two other Hawkeyes finished in the Top 10. Senior Nate Yankovich tied for fifth at 209. Junior Carson Schaake, the reigning Big Ten co-medalist, tied for seventh at 210.
Iowa won the team race by three shots over North Carolina State. The Hawkeyes finished at 22-under 842. Idaho was third, a shot behind North Carolina State. Kansas State was fourth, 10 back. The Hawkeyes had taken a seven-shot lead into Sunday’s final round on the strength of a 15-under 273 in Saturday’s second round.
