Iowa comeback falls short against Nebraska in Big Ten semis staff report

The 10th-seeded Iowa softball team fell 9-6 to No. 3 Nebraska in a Big Ten Conference Tournament semifinal on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

The Cornhuskers sparked for four runs in the top of the first thanks to three solo home runs from Kiki Stokes and MJ Knighten and a two-run blast from Steph Pasquale. Iowa responded in the bottom of the frame with a Holly Hoffman RBI single, a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice from Erin Erickson.

Nebraska added one run in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth for a 9-3 lead after four complete. Iowa threatened in the fifth with three runs when Kaitlyn Mullarkey posted an RBI single and Allie Wood flirted with the right field foul line with a two-run double. But the early setback proved to be too much and the comeback would go for naught.

The Hawkeyes finished their season 19-40 overall and 8-15 in conference play.

Nebraska and No. 1 Michigan advanced to the championship game.
