Two-time Greco-Roman national finalist Joe Gunther committed Tuesday to Iowa.

Joe Gunther's relationship with Iowa wrestling began last month with an attention-catching email.

A message from Iowa assistant Ryan Morningstar indicated the Hawkeyes were interested and started a speedy process of getting to know each other.

"It was incredible," Gunther said. "I was not expecting it."

After a series of messages, phone calls and visits, the Illinois state medalist and two-time Greco-Roman national finalist announced Tuesday that he plans to wrestle for the Hawkeyes. Gunther selected Iowa over Illinois, Minnesota, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Northern Colorado.

"The program, the coaching staff, the way they train and the way the room is, you can tell it's somewhere that can make you the best you can be," he said.

Gunther is expected to wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds in college. He's believed to be the 10th wrestler to join Iowa's 2015 recruiting class. Iowa also secured a commitment Tuesday from Vince Turk, an Illinois state champion from Montini Catholic.
