An impressive weekend for visiting recruits continues to pay off for Iowa wrestling.

Head coach Tom Brands added a second commitment off Saturday’s talent-filled campus tours, with English Valleys senior Zachary Axmear making a verbal commitment on Monday night.

The 152-pound standout is the second state runner-up to accept Iowa’s offer in as many days, following Western Dubuque heavyweight Aaron Costello.

English Valleys senior Zachary Axmear celebrates a semifinal victory at the 2016 state wrestling tournament.

“Home is where the heart is,” Axmear posted on social media.

“I’m proud to say I will further my education and career (at) the University of Iowa.”

Axmear is a three-time state qualifier with the Bears from North English, finishing fifth at 145 as a freshman, third at 152 as a sophomore and registering his only loss as a junior in 152’s Class 1A final to Alburnett’s Conner Shulista. His overall record as a prep is 154-8.

Axmear will join Iowa’s 2017 group headlined by three-time world champion Spencer Lee. The early signing period for wrestlers runs from Nov. 9-16, with a regular period opening April 12, 2017.

Iowa opens its 2016-17 home schedule on Nov. 18 with the Iowa City Duals.
