Iowa adds wrestling commit from California’s Justin Mejia — again

California state champion Justin Mejia committed Wednesday to Iowa.

The Hawkeyes have regained a recruit they had back in 2014.

Justin Mejia, a lightweight wrestler from Clovis, Calif., announced his commitment to Iowa on Wednesday, less than two weeks after leaving Illinois’ 2017 class because of what he called an “application error.”

California’s second ever four-time state champion originally committed to Iowa coaches Tom and Terry Brands ahead of his sophomore season, but he decommitted last summer when elite Pennsylvania prospects Spencer Lee (2017) and Gavin Teasdale (2018) gave the Hawkeyes their verbals. Teasdale has since flipped his commitment to Penn State.

Mejia won his fourth prep title at 126 pounds and likely projects to 133 at the college level. FloWrestling rates him as the No. 42 overall recruit in the 2017 class.

Former Illinois assistant and current Hawkeye Wrestling Club coach Mark Perry helped recruit Mejia to the Illini, but Mejia was granted a release from his National Letter of Intent earlier this month when he denied admission to Illinois.
