MURFREESBORO — Senior safety Kevin Byard will be headed to Mobile, Alabama in January to play in the 2016 Senior Bowl.

Byard and MTSU announced on social media that he's accepted an invitation to play in the college football showcase.

This comes just a day after Byard broke the MTSU career record for most interceptions. He recorded his 18th pick against North Texas.

The Senior Bowl is a postseason college football all-star game played in Mobile that showcases the top NFL prospects among those collegiate players who have completed their eligibility.

In July, Byard was named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list, which is presented annually to the nation's best defensive back.

It was the third straight year Byard has been named to the list.

Byard will likely be playing on Sundays in a few months and the game gives him a chance to perform in front of NFL coaches.

“(Byard) has got ball skills and has the numbers,” NFL analyst Brian Baldinger told The Daily News Journal at C-USA media day. “He can take the ball away, he can hit, and he’s got the size.

“I think he’s a natural right now.”
