UNI's Jacobson on signee McCloud: 'We’ve got a great one'
Comparisons are tricky, but Juwan McCloud might remind fans of a past Northern Iowa point guard.
“I’d say he’s got a similar feel to what Deon (Mitchell) had,” coach Ben Jacobson explained. “Deon made a lot of plays because he had such a good feel.
“Juwan will come to us a better 3-point shooter than what Deon was out of high school.”
McCloud, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Germantown, Wis., and Tanner Lohaus, a 6-7 forward from Iowa City, signed national letters of intent Wednesday with the Panthers.
Lohaus, whose brother, Wyatt, is currently a sophomore guard for Northern Iowa, brings versatility, especially on the defensive end.
“He’s got great footwork,” Jacobson said. “And I think he will impact the game in a number of different ways, the ability to guard three or four positions.”
Lohaus averaged 11 points and 4.4 rebounds last season for Iowa City West, a perennial big-school power.
His father, Brad, stood 6-11 while playing for Iowa and 11 seasons in the NBA.
“Offensively, he’s going to be a guy who can make a 3-point shot,” Jacobson said. “He can put it on the floor a little bit. He’s a good passer as well.
“He’s going to be able to score around the basket some.”
McCloud established himself as a primary scorer for his high school team, averaging 16.7 points per game while leading Germantown to a 27-1 record as a junior.
“He’s a true point guard in every sense of the word,” Jacobson said. “As we know, finding that guy to run your team and in a lot of ways run your program, with all the abilities of a really good point guard. ... That can be a difficult to find.
“And we think we’ve got a great one in Juwan.”
McCloud was named the North Shore Conference player of the year after helping Germantown win its sixth consecutive league title.
“He sees the floor,” Jacobson said. “His timing is really good, great job of involving his teammates.
“He also has the ability to get his own shot.”
