State football: One sentence on all 12 semifinal games and each championship matchup
The final six games of the 2019 high school football season are set.
And they’ll all decide the biggest prize of them all.
The six state championship football contests will take place this week at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The 8-Player, Class A and 3A games will go on Thursday, while the 1A, 2A and 4A tilts will go on Friday.
Many of the games carry grand anticipation.
We’ll have a new champ in 1A after West Lyon took down West Sioux. As a result, the Wildcats get Van Meter, the 2017 1A champs. In Class A, West Hancock will battle Grundy Center while Don Bosco and Audubon will kick things off in 8-Player.
Here, we offer one sentence on how each team got there — as well as each title game.
West Des Moines Valley 35, Bettendorf 7: The Jayden Williams and Creighton Mitchell show, as the two running backs rolled up a combined 312 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Dowling Catholic 42, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 6: The Gavin Williams and Teagan Johnson show, as the two running backs rolled up a combined 244 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Title game — Valley vs. Dowling, Friday, 7 p.m.: Does it get any better than this?
Western Dubuque 48, Lewis Central 14: Bobcats are back in the title game after Calvin Harris throws for four touchdowns against a tough Titan defense.
Solon 43, Sergeant-Bluff Luton 36: An absolute thriller, with the Spartans coming out on top after rallying from a 36-28 deficit with less than six minutes to play.
Title game — Western Dubuque vs. Solon, Thursday, 7 p.m.: Western Dubuque’s been dominant, but Solon has shown the ability to scrap, which means this will be fun.
OABCIG 41, Algona 32: Cooper DeJean throws for 397 yards and four touchdowns, and OABCIG is one of eight unbeaten teams.
Waukon 32, Williamsburg 14: Dawson Baures goes for 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries to lead the Indians back to the state final.
Title game — OABCIG vs. Waukon, Friday, 1 p.m.: Waukon’s incredibly-balanced attack against OABCIG’s aerial attack should make this one a great final.
Van Meter 49, Iowa City Regina 17: The Anthony Potthoff show, as the senior went 306 total yards and five touchdowns — two passing, three rushing.
West Lyon 26, West Sioux 21: A strong argument against Solon-Sergeant Bluff as the best game of the entire semifinal round.
Title game — Van Meter vs. West Lyon, Friday, 10 a.m.: Two very balanced teams that should clash in an excellent game on Friday morning.
Grundy Center 23, Saint Ansgar 21: The Grundy Center Spartans limit Saint Ansgar’s ferocious ground game and are a win away from its first state title since they won 1A in 1988.
West Hancock 49, Woodbury Central 20: Tate Hagen rushed for 244 yards and two touchdowns and the Eagles are in the state finals for the first time since 2011.
Title game — Grundy Center vs. West Hancock, Thursday, 1:30 p.m.: West Hancock is 1-2 all-time in title games, while Grundy Center is 3-0.
Don Bosco 50, Turkey Valley 6: The Dons are in the 8-Player title game for the sixth time in the last eight years.
Audubon 39, Remsen St. Mary’s 28: Audubon avenges its only loss of the season thanks to 281 total yards and five touchdowns from Skyler Schultes.
Title game — Don Bosco vs. Audubon, Thursday, 10 a.m.: The Wheelers’ only other state-title game appearance was in 1977, in 3A — seriously — while the Dons are looking for title No. 4.
