Lane Kiffin is setting his sights high at Florida Atlantic.

The new Owls coach laid out his vision during his introductory news conference at the school Tuesday.

"This will be about working every day to create a championship program here, very much like programs I've been fortunate to be a part of earlier at different places," Kiffin said. "We will work every day to create a championship environment by the way that we work."

Kiffin said he was happy at Alabama and not looking to leave after three years as offensive coordinator under Nick Saban. But he was attracted by the opportunity to become a head coach after previous stints with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee and Southern California.

"When we first started speaking almost two weeks ago about this job, I was not in a position where my mind was 'I have to be a head coach,'" Kiffin said. "My mindset was I want to find a place that is committed to winning. A program that is committed to going to the next level."

Among the people he thanked was Saban. Kiffin admitted that after being fired by USC in 2013 his "phone was not ringing" until hearing from the Alabama coach. He noted the success he had with the Crimson Tide opened the door for him to again lead his own program.

Kiffin, who was hired by the Raiders at the age of 32, said he learned from his experience after being dismissed by the Raiders and later from USC, noting he was still trying to figure out his own coaching identity on the job and he is more comfortable leading a program now.

"I'm in a different place than I was 10 years ago," he said.

The rebuilding job at Florida Atlantic won't have Kiffin's full attention until Alabama's season is over.

Kiffin will be staying with the Crimson Tide through the College Football Playoff. He joked he was leaving South Florida later Tuesday with Saban expecting him Wednesday at a 7:30 a.m. staff meeting in Tuscaloosa.
