What to know about newest Colts signing Justin Houston
The Indianapolis Colts finally made the free agent splash fans had been waiting for when they inked linebacker Justin Houston to a two-year, $24 million deal Thursday. Here's what you need to know about the newest member of the Colts.
Justin Houston spent eight seasons with the Chiefs
He was drafted in the third round of the 2011 draft by Kansas City out of Georgia. He has played in 102 games and started 96. He has 78.5 sacks, including a career-high 22 in 2014 and nine last season. He is a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was a first team All-Pro selection in 2014.
He's continued to be productive as he has gotten older
Last season, Pro Football Focus rated Houston as the No. 80 player in the NFL. Despite some trouble with injuries, he has 18.5 sacks and 96 tackles in his past 27 games.
He's familiar with Colts GM Chris Ballard
Houston and Ballard overlapped for four seasons (2013-16) in Kansas City, while Ballard was the team's director of football operations. Houston told reporters Thursday that he and Ballard had been exchanging text messages over the past several days.
"Just knowing he was somebody I could trust," Houston said of the Colts GM. "I got an honest answer (from him)."
He was one of the most productive free agents for his position
The Colts had 33 sacks last season as a team, ranking 19th in the NFL. Adding Houston to the mix should make a big difference in an area where the Colts needed one.
